The similarity of these two hair loss drugs often causes confusion and leads many men to ask which is most effective for stopping the loss of their hair

The first and most important point to make is that both Proscar and Propecia are manufactured by the same company (Merck), and both contain the same active ingredient, Finasteride.

So how are they different?

The difference lies in the intended use of the two drugs, and subsequently the dosage of Finasteride that each contains.

Propecia is designed primarily as a hair loss solution, with each tablet containing 1mg of Finasteride.

Proscar on the other hand contains 5mg of Finasteride, and is intended for men with enlarged prostates. The drug prevents the conversion of naturally occurring testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which can cause an enlarged prostate and later, a condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, otherwise known as BPH or prostate cancer.

Whereas the role of Propecia is intended to be cosmetic (i.e preventing or reducing hair loss), Proscar has a much more serious purpose and has undoubtedly prevented many thousands of men from developing prostate cancer.

Will Proscar prevent hair loss?

There is no evidence to suggest that a 5mg dose of Finasteride is more effective at preventing hair loss than a 1mg dose. Proscar therefore stands the same chance of preventing hair loss as Propecia.

Why not buy Proscar and split the tablets?

Proscar and Propecia are similarly priced, therefore in theory it would be more cost-effective to buy Proscar and split the tablets as you need them. If you choose to do so, bear in mind that no-one (including HIS) would recommend this as it would be impossible to know exactly what dosage you’d be taking each time.

What about the potential side effects?

Propecia usage has long been associated with undesirable side effects in some users, including reduced sexual function. Proscar is likely to carry the same risk, although it is not clear whether the increased dose of Finasteride has any influence on the extent of this risk. For more information about the potential side effects, see the following video and the links at the bottom of this page.

Does anyone know how much cheaper Proscar is than Propecia? I’m paying $80 a month for Propecia refills and am curious about any cheaper, and equally effective alternatives. Any advice/suggestions greatly appreciated.

I pay about $80 for a 4 month supply of Proscar.

The only inconvenience is cutting the pill, but it can easily be done with a pill splitter. Many hair restoration physicians will prescribe Proscar for hair loss and feel taking 1/4 pill daily is just as effective as 1 Propecia pill daily.

I hope this helps.

I’m wondering if it would be safe to switch from Propecia to Proscar immediately and safely. I’m going on two months with Propecia – does anyone think it wise or not a good idea to just switch to Proscar on my third month? Could this reduce the efficacy of the medication or be a potentially dangerous move?

Proscar and Propecia are the exactly same medication which is finasteride, produced by the same company (Merck) under two different brand names. The difference is in the dosage where you should take 1/4 of Proscar daily. Just finish your batch of Propecia and start Proscar after. Even though Propecia is usually not reimbursed by your insurance company, Proscar might be. You should be able to reduce your cost by 75% even without insurance reimbursement.

One pill of Proscar costs me $2, but i use it in 4 days, and then my insurance reimburses about 80%, therefore, i pay about $3/month out of pocket for Proscar.

I totally agree.
It could be the same for some of these so called brand names also.

You buy what you think & trust that it does the job & like yourself jump ship only to find out it works for you.

Kinda scary what these people do with these drugs with what fullers they use.
I wish there was some kind of test kit we could get our hands on to see what we are puting in our bodies..

Who watches over these drug makers. are we geting what we payed for?

If you’re experiencing hair loss you’re likely suffering from feelings of embarrassment and frustration. It can be very difficult to watch your hair-line recede, particularly if you feel like you have no other options. There are however a variety of hair restoration solutions available for those suffering from hair loss.

Prescription Medication

Many men choose to take prescription medications to stop and reverse their advancing hair loss. Formulated to treat male pattern baldness, these prescriptions have already helped millions of men around the globe. Because more than 95% of hair loss in men is characterized as male pattern baldness, these prescriptions are highly effective in the majority of hair loss sufferers.

Propecia is perhaps the most widely recognized prescription drug for the treatment of hair loss on the market today. Propecia is formulated to prevent the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone which damages healthy hair follicles and interrupts the hair growth cycle. Consumers have learned long ago that generic drugs offer substantial savings over the same “brand name” drug. It’s the same with finasteride, the generic form of version of Propecia, which is now available.

The Cost of Propecia

A “name brand” medication, Propecia is one of the most expensive prescriptions for hair loss in men on the market today. A 3 month supply of Propecia typically costs roughly $215, or $2.38 per day. While this is a price that many hair loss suffers pay without question, those who do their research are often surprised to learn that the cost of Finasteride is significantly less.

The Cost of Finasteride

A generic medication, finasteride is available at a whopping 88% savings when compared to Propecia. A 3 month supply of finasteride is available for a mere $25, or $0.27 per day. If you’re seeking a more affordable prescription for hair loss, we encourage you to consider finasteride.
