    ABOUT US

Houseboat Adventures is a family-run company, owned by Lorelie and Jeff Gordon. Back in the early 80’s they travelled across Canada looking for the best lake to relocate to and embark on their idea of renting houseboats. They hit the jackpot when they came to the amazing Lake of the Woods – it was destined to be their home.

Their 3 boys Jayme, Joel & Trevor have all grown up with houseboats and began working with their parents at a very young age. They would travel to work by fishing boat, lunches in hand to their Saturday job cleaning fishing boats at age 10 and by mid teens they were comfortable piloting the houseboats and giving navigation lessons for their guests.

Kenora continues to be their home. The boys may be off to university, but they come home every summer to work with their parents and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The Gordon’s have welcomed their guests for over 30 years.

We welcome you to come share our passion and experience all that we have to offer.

    FAMILY RUN

We take great pride in knowing that the business we run is an investment in our family to provide the quality you can trust.

    EXPERIENCED TEAM

Our staff have over 80 years of combined knowledge to provide a great feeling of comfort and security on your adventure.

    ENVIRONMENTALLY CONCIOUS

We love our lake and we want you to love it too. So we take every step to ensure the future of Lake of the Woods.

No worries mate. We are always here to help you with your booking process, so you can focus on your exciting houseboat vacation.

    PRE-BOOKING QUESTIONS?

How early should I reserve a houseboat?
Many of our bookings are made 6 months or more in advance and some of our guests reserve for next season when they depart their current houseboat vacation. Some models are more popular but if you are flexible on the dates that helps too. Sometimes a last-minute request can be accommodated. Contact us and we would happy to check availability.

I have never driven a houseboat – can I still rent one?
Many of our guests have never driven a houseboat. Our guests receive a comprehensive package of information prior to their rental. We include a Cruising and Operators Guide and a map. The guide has all of the information required for you to plan your “Houseboat Adventure” including navigational and instructional information, fishing tips, customs information for our US guests and much more. Upon arrival we review houseboat operation and provide a Captain’s lesson and navigation instruction. We will even take you out on your houseboat for a few miles to ensure you are comfortable at the helm.

Do I need a special license to drive the houseboat?
Transport Canada regulations require all operators of motorized pleasure craft (including houseboats) in Canada to have Proof of Operator Competency. As an operator of a houseboat business we are able to issue you a “Proof of Competency”, which acts as your boating license while you are driving our boats. We have always provided extensive information and training to our guests. We want you to feel comfortable driving and navigating and have a safe and wonderful vacation.

How do I communicate with the base if I have a question during my rental?
We have VHF marine radios aboard all of our houseboats for ship-to-shore communication. There is also very good cell phone coverage over most of the Lake to contact us by phone.

Where do I dock at night?
You would beach the houseboat and tie up. There are hundreds of beaches on our huge lake for you to explore. We have marked about 80 beaches on our personalized map for our guests’ convenience. We provide full instruction as to how to secure the houseboat.

Can I fish from the houseboat?
It is a great experience to have your coffee in hand and cast off the houseboat deck early morning when all is quiet. However, most of our fishermen prefer to have a boat to fish with.

What if I forget something can I come back to your dock?
Generally once our guests leave our dock they do not return until the end of their vacation. We offer a mid-week service run for our guests and deliver extra supplies you may require. Small fuel surcharge applicable.

What is included in your prices?
We include tax (13% HST), insurance, free parking, septic pumpout, 16’ fishing boat (motor extra, bring your own or rent ours), generator, navigation charts, kitchen supplies and bedding. For a complete list of what each houseboat includes in its features see: What We Supply

Are there additional costs not included in your price?

    • Fuel and propane, which averages about $200 per trip
    • Motor for the fishing boat (fishing boat included) – you can rent ours or bring your own. A fishing boat and motor is required as, in the event of an emergency you have the ability to act immediately such as boat back into our City quickly. Our hospital has boat docking. Having a boat and motor along also makes exploring and fishing enjoyable.
    • Cleaning charge – if required. Our houseboats are supplied clean and we request you return them clean. We do not expect our guests to scrub floor or walls, but a general tidy-up ensuring dishes are clean and items are put away is expected. If cleaning charges are accessed: 44’ $175, 49’ $200, 58’ $275, 68’ $350

Fertility drug: clomifene citrate (clomifene, clomid)

    In this article

    What is clomifene citrate?

Clomifene citrate is a drug treatment that stimulates your ovaries to produce eggs.
Ovulation stimulation using clomifene citrate is a well-established, effective treatment. Clomifene citrate is the most widely used of all fertility drugs.

Other drugs that may be used to treat ovulation disorders include metformin, dexamethasone and bromocriptine .

What's the success rate of clomifene citrate?

UK based research shows about 70 per cent of women will ovulate in response to a fairly low dose of clomifene citrate. Of those who ovulate, about 40 per cent will become pregnant. So, if you're prescribed clomifene you have about a 28 per cent chance of conceiving.

Other factors that can affect the pregnancy rate include:

    • the time in your cycle that you have sex
    • your age and weight
    • the count, shape, speed and motility (ability to move) of your spouse's sperm

Is clomifene citrate right for me?

Drugs that stimulate ovulation can be useful whether or not you ovulate irregularly, and whether or not you have polycystic ovaries or polycystic ovary syndrome.

Clomifene citrate may also be used in cases of unexplained infertility, although there's a lack of evidence that it really helps.

You might be prescribed clomifene citrate before you undergo a fertility treatment such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), to boost your egg production.

    How does clomifene citrate work?

Clomifene citrate blocks the effect of the hormone oestrogen in your body. This blocking effect tricks your body into increasing the levels of two other hormones that are essential for ovulation. These two other hormones are:

    • follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
    • luteinising hormone (LH)

FSH causes the eggs in your ovaries to ripen, ready for release. LH triggers the release of one or more mature eggs from the ovary follicles. The egg or eggs then move down into one of your fallopian tubes.

How long will I have to take clomifene citrate for?

You usually take clomifene in pill form for five days of your cycle, for up to six month. Exactly when you start taking the pills depends on your menstrual cycle.

If you have regular cycles. you'll start taking the pills within five days of your period starting, preferably on about day two.

If you're not menstruating at all or if your cycle is very irregular, your doctor will check that you're not pregnant. She'll then give you a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone, a progestogen called Provera.

Progesterone works with oestrogen to keep your reproductive cycle regular. Provera will re-establish your periods. Once you're having periods, you can then start taking clomifene citrate.

Ovulation generally occurs between five days and nine days after you've taken your last pill. Your fertility specialist may monitor your ovaries using ultrasound. She'll look to see whether your ovaries are preparing an egg follicle to release the egg into one of your fallopian tubes. However, clomifene citrate is often used without ultrasound monitoring.

You might ovulate in the first month of taking clomifene citrate. Or it can take a month or two of drug therapy for you to start ovulating regularly.

In some cases, treatment may be continued for up to 12 cycles, probably with a gap between courses of treatment. This is because you have a higher chance of getting pregnant if treatment is continued for this long.

Unfortunately, some women don't respond to clomifene citrate at all. If you're not ovulating despite taking clomifene citrate for six months, ask your doctor what other options may be open to you.

Does clomifene citrate have any side-effects?

Clomifene citrate can cause a wide range of minor side-effects, including:

    • blurred vision (tell your doctor as soon as possible if you experience this)
    • hot flushes
    • mood swings
    • abdominal pain
    • breast tenderness
    • heavy periods
    • weight gain
    • insomnia
    • spots
    • nausea

Clomifene citrate can also cause your cervical mucus to become drier, so you may want to use a sperm-friendly vaginal lubricant.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is another potential side-effect of clomifene citrate. OHSS occurs when you respond too well to fertility drugs and your ovaries become very swollen. Watch out for your tummy swelling up, giving you a full, bloated feeling.

OHSS can develop into a serious condition. However, most cases of OHSS in response to clomifene citrate are mild and are resolved after a few days.

Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is the main fertility drug thought to be responsible for severe cases of OHSS. This means that your chances of getting severe OHSS are increased if you're taking clomifene citrate with hCG. If you do develop severe OHSS, your doctor will monitor you closely.

I have polycystic ovary syndrome. Will clomifene citrate work for me?

If you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), there is a chance that clomifene citrate won't work for you. About 30 per cent of women with PCOS are resistant to clomifene citrate. This is more common if you have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25.

If that's the case, your doctor may recommend that you try to lose some weight. Even a little weight loss can help to improve your chances of ovulation.

Your doctor may prescribe medication to help your body to respond to clomifene citrate. The medication is an insulin-sensitising drug called metformin. Metformin can help you respond to clomifene citrate and has been shown to increase your chances of ovulation and pregnancy.

Another drug that may help women with PCOS to conceive while using clomifene citrate is dexamethasone. This is a corticosteroid that can help if your adrenal glands are not producing enough hormones. Like many corticosteroids, its side-effects include increased appetite and weight gain, so your doctor may use it only for certain conditions.

Is there anything else I should know about clomifene citrate?

There is a theory that clomifene citrate's anti-oestrogen effect may increase the risk of miscarriage. It's estimated that about 20 per cent of pregnancies conceived after treatment with clomifene citrate miscarry. However, this is a similar rate to that found in couples who haven't had any fertility treatment. It's estimated that about 25 per cent of women who start taking the drug will go on to have a live birth.

There's some on-going concern that using clomifene citrate for more than 12 cycles of treatment may be linked with ovarian cancer. However, reviews of the evidence haven't supported a strong link between ovarian cancer and fertility drugs. Findings suggest that it's the fertility problem itself that may increase the risk, rather than the drugs used to treat it.

Drugs that stimulate ovulation can result in more than one egg being released. This increases your chance of multiple pregnancy. If you take clomifene citrate you have between an eight per cent and 13 per cent chance of a multiple pregnancy, most likely twins.
